Gilded Age - A Show & Sale of JewelArt, September 2023
I have always admired the elegance of an older time, when people dressed up with grace and finesse. Beautiful hand woven textiles were elegantly worn by women and men, alike. Jewellery was key in the attire and always accounted for, even before the garments were selected. Necklaces were often hidden with the pallu of the sari and the wearer enjoyed the pieces for her own pleasure, over the viewers’. I have lived in Mumbai almost my entire life and have noticed that the sari has been worn less and less, with each passing year. My own mum always wore her saris with flair and ease, as did many women whose style I had admired since I was a child. I always thought, I would “grow up” and wear saris often too, but alas, this rarely happens. What I did manage to do is grow deeper in my love with jewels. And with the confidence to buy them for myself from the time I was in my 20’s. Here in India, we live with the great privilege of having such beautiful and old techniques of hand-crafted luxury, available to us so easily. In my own tiny part, I want to stay connected to our rich heritage and show contemporary Indian fine jewellery to everyone. Jewellery that isn’t generic in quality or design…jewels that have soul, elegance, quality and value. Jewels that aren’t “trendy”, but are beauties for keeps. This year's show isn’t about old jewellery…it is about showcasing new and contemporary designs whilst reminding us that they can be worn with elegance and individuality, now and always.
